Confessions Of An Active Adopter

Are you familiar with the term “Early Adopter”? Based on Everett Rogers theory coined Diffusion of innovations. These folks are generally the people who will buy new products as fast as possible (and can afford them) an then influence others buy talking about said product. Often that influence is based on reviews of the product publicly or by that person talking to other folks in a social circle. Are you an early adopter? If you’re reading this, you likely aren’t the pure definition of this category, but more of a combination of two or three of the categories (depending your risk tolerance). Based on my experience, there is a kind of category that seems to be missing from all this. Let me explain.

3D Printing: Scary, Or A New Frontier?

You really can’t go anywhere without hearing the bad news about gun violence. Recently, 12 (*) people were killed in a shooting rampage in Colorado at a movie showing. Locally, in Toronto, we’ve had our share of recent gun violence including a shooting in the Eaton Centre and at Scarborough house party. These horrible crimes are being committed with guns in what feels like increasing frequency. Parallel to this though, is a news story that a man has successfully created and fired a .22 pistol with a 3D Printer. The printer used was apparently created in the 1990’s, which is real test of enduring technology. Given that 3D printing is becoming cheaper and cheaper, and access to blueprints is apparently more readily available – it appears as though we’re on the cusp of a major technological shift.

Why So Slow? Blame Jevons Paradox, Bufferbloat And Cruft

A recent article lead to me to read more about an interesting idea called Jevons Paradox. William Stanley Jevon postulated that “technological progress that increases the efficiency with which a resource is used tends to increase (rather than decrease) the rate of consumption of that resource”. This fundamental idea generally runs counter to the thought that, when you increase the efficiency of something by way of technological means, the consumption of that resource should go down. It is an idea that has often been overshadowed by more famous theories like “Moore’s Law“, but is no less fascinating when applying it to  computing and IT infrastructure.

On the phone the other day, my mom described the ongoing difficulty she had been having with her laptop.  Faced with a computer that would not turn on, she had no idea what was wrong, nor the vaguest idea how to fix it.

Apparently my father took a shot at “repairing” it, albeit without a manual or technical advice of any sort.  Hours later, my mother checked in on him only to find the computer – wires splayed and beeping sounds filling the room – worse off than it was before. Exasperated, she would bring the computer to Rogers for the third time in two weeks, fingers crossed for a lasting solution.
